Strep Throat


Strep throat is a bacterial infection of the throat caused by group A Streptococcus. It is most common in children ages 5–15.


Symptoms


Sudden sore throat


Painful swallowing


Fever


Red, swollen tonsils, sometimes with white patches


Tiny red spots on the roof of the mouth


Headache or stomach pain


Swollen neck lymph nodes


Prevention


Frequent handwashing


Avoid sharing utensils, cups, or toothbrushes


Keep children home until at least 24 hours after starting antibiotics
